U23 AFCON 2019: Cameroon plays for qualification against Tunisia
Cameroon’s U23 Lions are set to host Tunisia’s Carthage Eagles this Friday, September 6th, in Yaoundé for the first leg of the final round of the U23 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The two-legged tie will determine which team secures a spot in the third edition of the U23 AFCON, scheduled to take place in Egypt from November 8th to 22nd. The return leg will be held in Tunisia, with both sides aiming to secure qualification for the prestigious tournament.
Captain Samuel Oum Gouet expressed confidence in the squad’s mindset ahead of the clash. “We know what we have to do and we want to do it well. No matter who we are up against, our mindset and morale are excellent,” he said, emphasizing the team’s determination to succeed.
Coach Rigobert Song and his players have been preparing together since August 20th, focusing on both tactical cohesion and team spirit. “I can say that we are not 100% ready, but we have everything we need. All the players have arrived, and the atmosphere is very good. My wish is to score the first goal and protect our defense. We are working with the goalkeepers on this. We hope that the good atmosphere within the team will continue so that we can be ready for both matches,” Song explained.
Cameroon’s preparation has emphasized defensive solidity and attacking efficiency, with the team looking to capitalize on home advantage in Yaoundé. Both the coach and the players acknowledge the importance of scoring early in the first leg while maintaining a strong defensive structure to build confidence ahead of the return match in Tunisia.
The Lions’ U23 squad has shown promise throughout their training camp, combining experience with youthful energy. With clear objectives and high morale, Cameroon is aiming to continue its strong tradition in youth competitions and earn its place in the continental showcase in Egypt later this year.
