Rwanda Flooded with Applications for National Team Coaching Role
The Rwandan Football Federation (FERWAFA) is facing an overwhelming response in its search for a new head coach for the national team, the Amavubi. Olivier Mulindahabi, a member of the federation’s steering committee, revealed to MtnFootball.com that the federation has received 50 applications for the vacant position.
The position became available after Stephen Constantine, the previous Cypriot coach, departed to take over the Indian national team a few weeks ago. Since then, Lee Johnson, FERWAFA’s technical director, has been acting as interim manager.
Among the notable applicants are:
-
Johnny McKinstry, the Irish coach who previously led Sierra Leone’s national team
-
Stewart Hall, an Englishman known for his stints at Azam FC (Tanzania) and Sofapaka FC (Kenya)
Surprisingly, coaches of Rwanda’s biggest domestic clubs — APR FC, AS Kigali, and Police FC — have reportedly declined to apply for the national team post.
What Lies Ahead for the New Coach?
The incoming head coach will face a packed agenda, including:
-
2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers
-
2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers
-
Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup
-
2026 African Nations Championship (CHAN) — which Rwanda will host
With such a demanding schedule and a major continental tournament on home soil, FERWAFA is expected to appoint a manager with strong tactical ability and experience managing under pressure.
The official announcement is expected soon, as Rwanda aims to begin preparations for the upcoming qualifiers and tournaments in earnest.
