Morocco’s U-20 squad aims for history against France in World Cup semi-final

In what has become a historic run, Morocco’s U-20 national football team stands just one step away from glory as they gear up to face France in the semi-finals of the U-20 World Cup at the Elias Figueroa Stadium.

The significance of this match goes beyond just reaching the final, it evokes memories of their senior team’s defeat against France in the 2022 Qatar World Cup, fueling their desire for redemption.

Morocco’s youth reached this stage after a stunning 3-1 victory over the United States, repeating their landmark achievement from 2005 when they finished fourth in the Netherlands. This campaign reflects a new maturity and thriving youth development that’s paying off on international stages.

France, meanwhile, arrives with a reputation for strength, having overcome Norway 2-1 thanks to striker Simon Bouabri. Both teams are eager for their place in the final, with Morocco hoping to become the first Arab and only the third African team (after Ghana and Nigeria) to reach the U-20 final.

Coach Mohamed Ouahbi will lead a confident squad, blending local and European-based talents. He highlighted after beating the U.S., “The team recovered its tactical principles and maintained composure under pressure.” The only absence is right-back Ali Maamar due to suspension, but star players like Othman Maama, Yassine Jassim, and defenders Ismail Bakhiti and Ismail Baouf remain.

Ouahbi emphasized: “This group is extremely united… When you play in a World Cup, you don’t need extra motivation, they know their whole country, even the king, supports them.”

Morocco’s collective spirit, tactical discipline, and attacking flair have surprised many. The final is within their grasp, and this semi-final is a chance to write a new chapter in Moroccan football, one where the dream may finally be realized by a generation refusing to believe in the impossible
