Marshall Munetsi: Zimbabwean midfielder could return to Ligue 1 in January transfer window
Marshall Munetsi is emerging as a potential January transfer target for Ligue 1 clubs, raising the prospect of a swift return to France less than a year after leaving Stade de Reims.
French outlet L’Équipe reports that several unnamed top-flight sides are monitoring the Zimbabwe international ahead of the winter transfer window.
Wolverhampton Wanderers are understood to be open to allowing the 29-year-old midfielder to depart, with a loan move possible despite his contract running until 2028. Munetsi joined Wolves in February after six seasons at Reims, where he established himself as a reliable presence in midfield.
He initially became a regular starter under then head coach Vitor Pereira, making a strong early impression in England. Munetsi featured frequently in the Premier League, recording one goal and one assist across 13 appearances.
His situation changed following a managerial shift at Molineux later in the year. Rob Edwards replaced Pereira in November, and Munetsi’s playing time has reduced significantly under the new coach.
The midfielder is no longer considered central to Edwards’ plans, a development believed to be pushing him towards a January exit. Wolves’ struggles this season have added further uncertainty around his future.
The club sit bottom of the Premier League table with just two points from 16 matches. Fourteen defeats and two draws underline a campaign that has failed to gain momentum.
Summer departures weakened the squad, with Matheus Cunha, Rayan Aït-Nouri and Nelson Semedo all leaving. Against that backdrop, Munetsi’s experience could appeal to Ligue 1 sides seeking midfield depth.
A return to France would offer familiar surroundings after his most settled period at Reims. Munetsi was omitted from Zimbabwe’s squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Morocco due to injury.
That absence may ease negotiations, allowing clubs to act without international scheduling complications. Interest from Ligue 1 suggests his reputation remains intact despite reduced minutes.
