Mali’s Under-17 national team began their Independence Cup campaign in emphatic fashion, defeating Uzbekistan 5-1 in Tuesday’s tournament opener in Indonesia.

The young Aiglonnets wasted no time asserting control, displaying relentless attacking intent from the first whistle. Their breakthrough came in the 19th minute when Mamadou Traoré found the net with a composed finish.

The momentum firmly shifted in Mali’s favour, and just 16 minutes later, Raymond N’Djicoura Bomba doubled the lead with a precise strike.

Bomba proved to be the star of the match, completing a first-half brace in the 45th minute before capping his outstanding performance with a third goal on the hour mark.

His clinical finishing ensured Mali remained in firm control throughout the encounter.

The West Africans continued to trouble Uzbekistan’s defence after the break, with Ibrahim Diakité adding Mali’s fourth in the 50th minute following a well-orchestrated team move.

Although Uzbekistan managed to pull one goal back in the second half, it did little to alter the course of the match, as Mali’s composure and defensive organisation kept them well ahead.

The result marks a perfect start for Mali in the four-team preparatory tournament, which features Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and hosts Indonesia.

With a blend of attacking flair and defensive discipline, the Aiglonnets showcased their potential to contend strongly for the trophy.

Mali’s next challenge will be against Tajikistan on Friday, 15 August, before concluding their campaign against Indonesia on 18 August, a match scheduled a day after the host nation’s Independence Day celebrations.

The resounding win not only boosts Mali’s confidence but also sends a clear message to their tournament rivals that they are in peak form and ready to compete at the highest level.
