Landry Nguemo: The complicated situation of the Cameroonian in Türkiye

Former Bordeaux, Nancy, and Saint-Étienne midfielder Landry Nguemo is currently facing a difficult period in his career. Since joining Turkish side Kayserispor in 2015, the Cameroonian international has struggled to find stability, and his situation has recently taken a turn for the worse. Despite being under contract with the club until 2019, Nguemo has been sidelined from the first team and is now training separately from the main squad.

Speaking to Foot Mercato, the experienced midfielder opened up about the challenges he has been facing in Turkey. “I resumed training with Kayserispor as normal, and then overnight, the management made it clear that I had to find another club and they sidelined me from the first team,” he explained. “I have two years left on my contract. Today, I’m training to maintain my fitness with a group separate from the first team, which includes Ali Ahamada. This situation has been going on for two months.”

Nguemo, who built a solid reputation in Ligue 1 thanks to his performances with Bordeaux, Nancy, and Saint-Étienne, expressed his frustration at the lack of communication and clarity surrounding his situation. “I spoke with the current coach, but it’s not up to him to make decisions about my return to the professional squad,” he said. “Our discussion went well, but the management informed me that I had to find a new club without giving me a chance to play. You know, it’s a strange situation in Turkey.”

Despite these setbacks, the 31-year-old remains determined to continue his career and is focused on staying fit while awaiting a resolution. Nguemo emphasized that his main priority is to return to competitive football, even if it means leaving Kayserispor in the next transfer window. “We’ll have to find a solution with the management, a way to terminate the contract,” he stated. “They have to respect the contract because I still have two years left. We have a few months to find a solution, but either I return to the first team or I’ll go elsewhere.”

Nguemo’s professionalism remains evident as he continues to train diligently despite his exclusion from the squad. “For now, nothing is planned because the transfer window is closed,” he noted. “We’ll wait until January to discuss things with management. For my part, I have to do everything I can to be fit; that’s my only concern.”

Having represented Cameroon at international level, including appearances at the Africa Cup of Nations, Nguemo’s career has seen both highs and challenges. His time in France was marked by consistency and leadership, while his move to Turkey was intended to open a new chapter. However, the current situation at Kayserispor has left him uncertain about his immediate future.

Still, his determination to keep playing and his commitment to professionalism suggest that Nguemo will not remain on the sidelines for long.
