Ivorian defender Ibrahim Kalil Sy signs first professional contract with Cercle Bruges

Ivorian teenager Ibrahim Kalil Sy has signed his first professional contract with Belgian club Cercle Bruges, marking a significant milestone in his young career.

The 18-year-old defender, who arrived in Belgium after a trial earlier this year, has committed to a deal running until the summer of 2028, with an option for an additional year through to 2029.

The move comes after Sy impressed during a two-week test period in June, earning the confidence of the club’s coaching staff and securing a permanent place in their ranks.

From Morocco to Belgium

Sy’s journey to Europe began at Premier Art Academy in Morocco, where he honed his skills before being offered the chance to prove himself at Cercle Bruges. His determination during the trial convinced the Belgian side to offer him professional terms.

The announcement of his signing was made official on Cercle Bruges’ website, with confirmation that the Ivorian will initially link up with Jong Cercle, the club’s reserve team.

This stage will provide him with the opportunity to continue his development in a competitive environment, with the ultimate aim of breaking into the senior squad and making his mark in the Jupiler Pro League.

A dream realised

Speaking to Africafoot following the announcement, Sy described the pride he felt in securing his first professional contract, crediting his time in Morocco as the foundation of his progress.

“I was at an academy called Premier Art, which is located in Morocco. It was from there that I came here to Belgium for a test. After two weeks of hard work, I was selected by the supervisors and this allowed me to sign my very first professional contract with Cercle Bruges,” he explained.

For the young defender, the signing represents only the beginning of his ambitions. “By signing this first contract, I have reached the first level.

Now I have to continue working hard to earn my place in the squad. The plan is to perform with the team, play as many matches as possible and keep developing,” he said.

Determined for the future

Sy made it clear that his ambitions stretch well beyond the reserve squad. With clear goals in mind, he hopes to join the first-team “performance group” and make his debut in the Belgian top flight sooner rather than later.

“My goal is very clear: to soon join the performance group and make my debut in the Jupiler Pro League with Cercle Bruges,” he declared.

He also spoke openly about his long-term dreams in the game. “My biggest dream is to be among the best defenders in the world. I would like to play in the most prestigious competitions on the planet and win both team and individual titles. I think all this will happen naturally, but I’ll keep working hard.”

A promising path ahead

Sy’s signing is the latest example of Cercle Bruges’ commitment to investing in youth development, with the club continuing to identify and nurture young talent from across the globe.

For Sy, the move provides a platform to grow within one of Belgium’s most respected footballing systems while chasing his ambition of competing at the highest level of the sport.

At just 18, the Ivorian defender has already demonstrated the determination and mindset needed to progress.

His challenge now is to convert early promise into consistency, as he begins his professional career in European football.
