Islam Slimani: Bordeaux had tried everything for the Algerian
Slimani Shines at Monaco Despite Bordeaux Interest
Since joining AS Monaco this summer, Islam Slimani has made an immediate impact, scoring 3 goals in 4 games at the start of the season. The Algerian striker looks poised to become a key figure in Monaco’s attacking line.
However, his move to the Principality almost didn’t happen. Girondins de Bordeaux also tried to secure the striker’s services but were ultimately unsuccessful. Bordeaux’s sporting director, Hugo Varela, explained the situation to L’Equipe:
“We tried to make it happen, but it didn’t work out. Slimani has been a target since January, but Leicester didn’t want to send him to Bordeaux. They preferred Monaco, with whom they maintain a good business relationship—similar to what happened with Adrien Silva last winter.”
As a reminder, Slimani is on loan from Leicester City and remains under contract with the English club. Despite this, he has quickly adapted to life in Ligue 1, giving Monaco an immediate boost at the start of the season.
