Ishak Belfodil: The Algerian is headed to Germany
Ishak Belfodil Leaves Standard Liège for Werder Bremen
As the summer transfer window reaches its final hours, Standard Liège continues to reshape its squad with several key departures. Following the exits of Benito Raman and Togolese international Mathieu Dossevi, the Belgian club has now confirmed the transfer of Ishak Belfodil to Werder Bremen.
The Algerian striker is set to join the German Bundesliga side on a one-year loan deal with an option to buy. This move marks yet another step in Belfodil’s well-traveled career, as he continues his journey across Europe’s top leagues.
A product of the Paris Saint-Germain and AC Boulogne-Billancourt youth systems, Belfodil also spent time at Clermont Foot before establishing himself at Olympique Lyonnais between 2009 and 2012. Since leaving Lyon, his career path has taken him to several clubs, including Bologna, Parma, Inter Milan, Livorno, and Baniyas SC in the United Arab Emirates, before making his return to Europe with Standard Liège in 2016.
At Standard, Belfodil rediscovered some of his form, becoming a key player in attack with his physical presence, dribbling ability, and knack for scoring. His performances in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League caught the attention of Werder Bremen, who were looking to strengthen their attacking options ahead of the new Bundesliga campaign.
For the 25-year-old forward, the move to Werder Bremen represents an opportunity to re-establish himself in one of Europe’s top leagues and possibly earn a permanent deal if his loan spell proves successful. The German club, meanwhile, hopes his experience and versatility will add depth and creativity to their front line.
With this transfer, Standard Liège continues to overhaul its roster, signaling a new phase for the club as it balances between financial prudence and squad renewal on deadline day.
