Hakim Ziyech: Between Ajax and Bayern, the choice is clear
Hakim Ziyech, the Moroccan international and star midfielder for Ajax Amsterdam, has openly explained why he turned down the opportunity to join German champions Bayern Munich, despite attracting interest from several top European clubs. After an impressive season with Ajax, Ziyech found himself on the radar of major teams, including Sevilla and Bayern, yet he chose to extend his stay with the Dutch club. The decision, he emphasized, was made well before Bayern’s approach.
Speaking to Dutch newspaper AD, Ziyech highlighted his strong attachment to Ajax and his desire to continue building his career there. “I really enjoy playing for Ajax Amsterdam. It feels good to start my fourth season here,” he said. “I’m sure Sevilla is a good club, but I’ve always said that everything had to be perfect if I were to leave. Sevilla didn’t give me that feeling, so I preferred to stay at Ajax Amsterdam.” The midfielder stressed that, while Bayern Munich was a prestigious option, his decision to remain at Ajax had been determined independently of any approach from the German side.
Ziyech made it clear that timing and clarity played a crucial role in his choice. “It was the right time to clarify my situation, both for Ajax and for myself. If a club wanted me, they could have acted sooner. I think everyone saw what we achieved with Ajax and what my role was in that success,” he noted. According to Ziyech, a transfer was never his ultimate goal. “A transfer was never the holy grail for me. If the right club doesn’t come along, then so be it. I’ve signed a new contract and I will definitely stay at Ajax this season,” he added, signaling his commitment to helping the club build on its recent successes.
The Moroccan international also emphasized his satisfaction with Ajax’s environment, the team’s cohesion, and the style of football he enjoys. “We have a great team, the atmosphere is excellent, and I want to prove that last season’s success wasn’t a fluke. I’m happy here. Money isn’t really an issue for me. I love football, and I’m having the best football experience here,” he explained. Ziyech’s focus on development and enjoyment on the pitch reflects his professional philosophy: to thrive in a system that allows him to attack with freedom while contributing defensively.
Throughout his interview, Ziyech highlighted his personal growth in multiple facets of the game. “Attacking with the ball and pressing without the ball. I’ve developed in both areas of the game, and I enjoy both. It brings out the best in me,” he said. His comments underline the importance he places on the right environment over the allure of high-profile transfers, emphasizing that every player must make choices that align with their own development and happiness.
By committing to Ajax, Ziyech demonstrates both loyalty and strategic thinking, opting for continued growth and stability over the immediate prestige of a high-profile move. His decision resonates as a statement of principle: success in football is not only about transfers or big contracts but also about finding a team, a style, and a club that allow a player to reach their full potential. As he begins another season with Ajax, Ziyech remains determined to prove that his previous achievements were no accident and to continue delivering performances that match his rising reputation in European football.
