Habib Beye confirms Seko Fofana will stay at Rennes amid injury comeback
Habib Beye has reassured fans that Seko Fofana remains a key part of Stade Rennais’ plans despite the midfielder’s recent injury setback.
Since returning to Ligue 1 with Rennes in January 2025 after a spell in Saudi Arabia, Fofana has worked hard to cement his place in the team.
The Ivory Coast international overcame several challenges to regain form and earn the trust of his coaches, as well as his spot in the Elephants national squad.
This season, Fofana has seen significantly more action compared to his initial months at Rennes.
He started seven of Rennes’ ten Ligue 1 fixtures, logging 642 minutes on the pitch.
His progress stalled in November after a muscle injury forced him out for a month.
During his absence, the trio of Valentin Rongier, Mahdi Camara, and Djaoui Cissé demonstrated solid performances, raising the competition for midfield positions.
As speculation about Fofana’s future intensified, Beye addressed the matter ahead of Rennes’ match against Brest in Ligue 1’s 16th round.
The Franco-Senegalese coach confirmed his faith in the 30-year-old.
“Seko is doing well. He trained perfectly this week. We keep an eye on things; our young players bring competition,” Beye said.
“I count on him just as much in 2026 as I did in 2025. It’s about performance, not status.
He is part of the squad and must prove he can start a match or make an impact. He is no different from any other player.”
Unless unexpected developments arise, Fofana will remain at Rennes during the upcoming winter transfer window.
He will need to deliver strong performances to reclaim a central role, particularly at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where he has been called up to represent Ivory Coast.
