Ghana FA Executive Council retains Black Stars coach Otto Addo despite AFCON 2025 qualifiers failure
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has decided to retain Otto Addo as head coach of the Black Stars, despite the team’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON),” Africasoccer.com has learned.
The decision was made after a high-stakes meeting between Coach Otto Addo and the GFA on Wednesday, November 27, following the team’s failure to secure qualification to feature at the 2025 AFCON.
Ghana’s failure to secure a spot in the 2025 AFCON marks a major setback for the Black Stars, as it’s the first time the team has missed the tournament since 2004. The disappointment is compounded by a series of underwhelming performances throughout the qualifiers, which saw Ghana finish behind their rivals in a group that many expected them to dominate.
The result sparked frustration among fans and pundits, with some calling for Addo’s resignation. Despite his early success with the team, including guiding Ghana to the World Cup playoffs, his inability to deliver in the AFCON qualifiers has raised questions about his future. However, after hours of intense discussions, the GFA Executive Council opted to stick with Addo, citing his long-term vision for the team.
Sources suggest that Otto Addo’s focus on rebuilding the Black Stars by nurturing young talent was a key factor in the GFA’s decision. While the AFCON failure is a significant setback, the GFA remains confident in Addo’s ability to develop a new generation of players capable of bringing Ghana back to the top of African football.
With his tenure now under scrutiny, Coach Otto Addo’s next challenge will be to guide Ghana to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the team’s qualification is now seen as crucial to his future as head coach.
