FC Barcelona: Moussa Wagué looks back on his season

After an impressive showing for Senegal at the 2018 World Cup, 20-year-old right-back Moussa Wagué attracted the attention of FC Barcelona and subsequently left Belgian side KAS Eupen to join the Spanish giants. Following a season that saw him contribute to Barcelona’s La Liga triumph, Wagué shared his reflections on his adaptation to the club and the unique environment at the Camp Nou.

“When I arrived in Barcelona, I didn’t know anyone. Fortunately, everyone welcomed me with open arms. I started with Barça B and then joined the first team. At the beginning, Piqué and Suárez’s jokes helped me relieve some of the pressure. I was lucky to make my first-team debut this season and win La Liga. I’m proud to play for the biggest club in the world,” Wagué said, expressing his gratitude and pride.

He also discussed the distinctive philosophy and culture at Barcelona, highlighting the club’s emphasis on winning and attacking football. “At Barça, it’s the complete opposite of what you see elsewhere. A draw is considered a defeat, and victories are seen as normal. We start every match as league leaders and are obligated to take all three points. Before playing, the coach always tells me, ‘You have to attack while defending.’ Anywhere else, coaches usually say, ‘Attack when you can, and get back into position quickly.’ Barcelona has a winning culture and a unique attacking style,” he explained.

Wagué acknowledged the influence of his childhood idols, noting how playing for a club once home to Samuel Eto’o, Seydou Keita, and Yaya Touré fulfilled a personal dream. “This year, I was lucky enough to finish the season as a Spanish champion. I hope to earn a place in the first team next season. I still have the Africa Cup of Nations and the tour to prove myself, if all goes well,” he added.

The young Senegalese defender is part of the 23-man squad representing the Lions of Teranga at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, where he will look to continue his development on the international stage. With his pace, technical ability, and experience gained at one of the world’s top clubs, Wagué is expected to play a key role for Senegal in the tournament, combining his club-level experience with the ambitions of his national team.
