Europa League: Senegal defender Moussa Niakhate on target as Lyon thump Maccabi Tel Aviv 6-0
Senegal defender Moussa Niakhate scored for Olympique Lyon on Thursday night, helping the team to demolish Maccabi Tel Aviv 6-0 in the Europa League.
Lyon got off to the perfect start in the 4th minute when Abner Vinicius reacted quickest to a rebound, stabbing the ball into the net to open the scoring.
Their momentum continued midway through the first half as Corentin Tolisso rose to meet a superb cross and guided his header inside the right post.
Niakhate added Lyon’s third in the 35th minute, finishing confidently into the bottom left corner beyond the reach of goalkeeper Roi Mishpati. It was a composed strike from the Senegalese defender and capped a dominant first-half display.
After the break, Lyon continued to overwhelm the hosts. Tolisso struck again in the 51st minute with a close-range header following an excellent delivery from Pavel Šulc.
Just three minutes later, Šulc turned provider once more, setting up Tolisso for an easy finish into an empty net to complete his hat-trick and stretch the lead to 5-0.
The scoring was rounded off in the 62nd minute when Adam Karabec latched onto a well-delivered cross inside the box and drilled a low effort into the bottom left corner.
It was a commanding all-round performance from Lyon, with Niakhate’s goal contributing to a night that firmly underlined the team’s attacking power in the Europa League.
