Cesc Fàbregas voices frustration over Assane Diao’s AFCON selection
Cesc Fàbregas has openly acknowledged his frustration following Assane Diao’s call-up to Senegal’s squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, admitting that discussions with both the player and the national team setup ended without agreement.
Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, the Como head coach confirmed that he had addressed the situation directly with the 20-year-old forward after his club’s recent match against Inter, as well as holding talks with Senegal coach Pape Thiaw.
However, Fàbregas made it clear that those exchanges failed to bring any resolution.
I prefer not to elaborate too much on the subject. He was called up and I spoke to him after the match against Inter. He knows my opinion well. I also spoke with his national team coach, but the conversation did not end very well, the Spanish coach told the media.
The remarks underline clear tension surrounding Diao’s international selection, particularly given his growing role at Como.
The former Real Betis attacker has been steadily integrated into the Italian side’s plans, making his absence during a key period of the season a point of concern for the coaching staff.
Despite his evident displeasure, Fàbregas was careful to stress that the club would not stand in the player’s way.
He acknowledged the legitimacy of the call-up and confirmed that Como would respect both the wishes of the player and the authority of the Senegalese Football Federation.
They have every right to do so. Diao will leave if he wishes, he added.
The situation reflects a familiar dilemma faced by clubs during major international tournaments, where player availability can clash with domestic priorities.
While Fàbregas avoided expanding further on the implications for his squad, his words conveyed a sense of disappointment rather than outright opposition, suggesting that the disagreement lies more in timing than principle.
As previously confirmed, Diao is expected to remain with Como for one final fixture before departing.
The forward will be available for Monday’s Serie A match against AS Roma, after which he will link up with the Senegal national team.
He is scheduled to travel to Morocco ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations, which will run from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.
For Senegal, Diao’s inclusion represents an investment in youth and attacking depth as they prepare for a demanding continental campaign.
For Como, it means temporarily losing a player viewed as an important component of their attacking structure, particularly at a stage of the season where consistency is crucial.
Fàbregas’s comments offered a rare glimpse into the behind-the-scenes negotiations that often accompany international call-ups.
While no compromise was reached, the coach’s acceptance of the final outcome signals a willingness to move forward, even if the decision leaves lingering frustration.
As Diao prepares to shift focus from club duties to international responsibility, the episode highlights the delicate balance between ambition, loyalty, and professional obligation — a balance that continues to test managers and players alike whenever major tournaments come around.
