Algerian striker Mohamed Amoura’s double fails to save Wolfsburg as Hoffenheim snatch victory
Mohamed Amoura’s fine display could not prevent Wolfsburg from falling to a 3-2 home defeat against Hoffenheim on Saturday, as the Algerian striker’s brace proved insufficient to revive his team’s fortunes in the Bundesliga.
The match at the Volkswagen Arena began brightly for Wolfsburg, with Amoura opening the scoring in the 14th minute after a slick attacking move.
His early strike appeared to put the hosts on course to end a disappointing run of form, but Hoffenheim quickly regained control of the contest.
Wouter Burger levelled for the visitors in the 31st minute with a well-placed effort before the match turned into a thrilling end-to-end battle.
Wolfsburg, who entered the fixture sitting 12th in the standings, struggled to maintain defensive composure against a Hoffenheim side looking to recover from a recent dip in form.
After the break, the goals came thick and fast. Amoura struck again in the 50th minute, showing predatory instincts to bring Wolfsburg back on level terms.
His movement and sharp finishing underlined why he has become one of Algeria’s most consistent attacking threats.
But just when it seemed momentum might swing back to the home side, Hoffenheim struck decisively.
Grischa Prömel restored the visitors’ lead almost immediately after Amoura’s equaliser, before Burger completed his brace in the 62nd minute to seal the result.
Despite late efforts from Wolfsburg to find a way back, their finishing lacked precision, and the match ended in disappointment for coach Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side.
The defeat marked Wolfsburg’s fifth of the season, leaving them in the lower half of the Bundesliga table and struggling for rhythm.
For Amoura, however, it was a night of personal redemption.
After enduring a quiet spell in recent weeks, the 24-year-old’s two-goal performance was a reminder of his sharp instincts and composure in front of goal.
His tally now stands at four goals in the Bundesliga and four across all competitions, making him one of Wolfsburg’s standout performers this term.
His resurgence will come as welcome news for Algeria manager Vladimir Petković, who is preparing his squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.
While Wolfsburg’s defensive frailties continue to cost them vital points, Amoura’s determination and form have once again reinforced his value — both to his club and to the Algerian national team, who will rely on his efficiency in front of goal in the months ahead.
