Algeria: Accounts blocked, USM Alger still alive thanks to its subscribers

Reigning Algerian champions USM Alger are currently navigating a challenging period both on and off the pitch. The club, based in the capital, is facing serious financial difficulties following the imprisonment of its main shareholder and the freezing of its bank accounts. These issues have left the team struggling to cover basic expenses, including travel for matches.

For instance, the trip to Niger for the first leg of the preliminary round of the CAF Champions League was financed by Al Hayat Petroleum, the company looking to acquire the club. Without such support, the journey would have been impossible given the club’s limited funds.

The situation has forced the team to rely on the solidarity of its supporters. For the second matchday of the Algerian Ligue 1 season, USM Alger faced CS Constantine on Monday evening, and the club was able to count on the mobilization of its season ticket holders. Over a thousand fans contributed to fundraising efforts, generating approximately 300 million centimes. Between 15% and 20% of this amount was allocated to cover the team’s travel expenses, underscoring the crucial role supporters have played in helping the club continue competing despite financial constraints.

Despite these off-field challenges, USM Alger have started the domestic season on a positive note. Currently sitting in 2nd place in the Algerian championship, the team secured a solid victory over ES Sétif on August 15th during the opening day of the season. This result demonstrates the squad’s resilience and focus, even amid organizational and financial uncertainty.

The financial crisis highlights the fragility of club operations in Algerian football, where administrative and legal complications can have a direct impact on a team’s performance and logistics. USM Alger’s reliance on fan support and external funding illustrates how clubs sometimes must innovate to remain competitive in continental and domestic competitions.

Looking ahead, the club’s immediate priorities include stabilizing its finances, ensuring players and staff can travel safely for matches, and maintaining strong performances on the field. The backing of supporters and potential investors like Al Hayat Petroleum may prove vital in helping USM Alger navigate these turbulent times while striving to defend their status as reigning champions.
