World Cup 2022 Preliminaries: Malawi knocks out Botswana

Malawi secured their place in the group stage of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers after defeating Botswana 1-0 in the second leg on Tuesday.

The first leg, played in Gaborone, ended in a goalless draw, leaving both teams with an open chance to advance. In the return match at home, Malawi controlled much of the game but struggled to break through until the final 15 minutes. The decisive moment came from the penalty spot, with Gerald Phiri converting to give the Flames the victory.

This result sends Malawi through to the next round, eliminating Botswana from the competition despite the efforts of their coach, Adel Amrouche. The second legs of the preliminary round continue, featuring several other crucial fixtures across the African zone.
