Champions League: Despite the financial crisis, USM Alger focuses on the competition
Plagued by a severe financial crisis following the incarceration of its president Ali Haddad, USM Alger is facing a challenging start to the season, with even the possibility of withdrawing from the CAF Champions League looming. Despite these off-field troubles, the team is determined to focus on the upcoming matches.
“We are professionals and we know how to put things in perspective. The financial problem is one thing and the field is another. Today, we have to focus all our energy on the next Champions League match,” said USMA playmaker Zouari, as reported by Le Buteur.
USM Alger advanced smoothly past the first round, defeating Sonidep of Niger without difficulty. Their next challenge comes on Sunday at home against Gor Mahia of Kenya. Zouari stressed the importance of preparation: “The most important thing is to prepare well for the rest. It’s up to the technical staff to give us the instructions we need to understand this team better. But the certainty is that our mission will not be easy against an opponent used to playing in the Champions League. That’s why we have to be well prepared.”
Despite the financial turmoil, Zouari sought to reassure supporters, emphasizing the team’s commitment to its objectives. “I want to assure them first of all that there is nothing to fear for USMA. We know we are in the midst of a financial crisis, but we will do everything we can to carry out our mission. We are not going to give up on our goal, which is to reach the group stage of the Champions League. I hope our supporters will come out in force at the Tchaker Stadium because we will need them more than ever,” he added.
The first leg of the sixteenth-finals clash between USMA and Gor Mahia is scheduled for September 15 at the Mustapha Tchaker Stadium in Blida, with the return leg set for September 29 at Nairobi’s Kasarani Stadium. With determination on the pitch and strong fan support, USM Alger aims to overcome the off-field difficulties and advance further in the African Champions League.
