Stade Rennais confident Seko Fofana will stay despite midfield competition

Seko Fofana is not expected to leave Stade Rennais during the winter transfer window, despite facing intense competition for his place as he returns from injury.

The Ivorian midfielder has been out for more than a month but is now nearing a comeback, with a possible return to action against Brest this weekend.

His absence coincided with a strong run of form from Rennes’ midfield trio—Valentin Rongier, Mahdi Camara and Djaoui Cissé—whose performances have strengthened the internal battle for places.

Fofana, who joined the club with high expectations, will now have to work his way back into a system that has functioned well without him.

Speaking at a press conference, Rennes coach Habib Beye offered an update on the 30-year-old’s condition and readiness to compete.

Seko is doing well. He trained perfectly this week. We’re keeping an eye on things; we have some young players, and that brings competition, Beye said.

Competition for minutes is expected to intensify as the Africa Cup of Nations approaches, with Fofana soon set to join Ivory Coast for the tournament.

The midfielder, who played a key role for the Elephants in recent years, will want to regain rhythm before departing for international duty.

Beye made it clear that Fofana will be judged on performance rather than reputation.

I’m counting on him just as much in 2026 as I was in 2025. It’s all about performance, not status. He’s part of the squad and he needs to show us, like everyone else, that he’s capable of starting a match or being an impact player. He’s no different from the other players, the Franco-Senegalese manager insisted.

The club does not consider a winter transfer, and Fofana is expected to remain an important figure in the long term.

The midfielder is currently valued at €10 million on Transfermarkt and is under contract with Rennes until June 2029, making any mid-season departure unlikely.

Rennes now turn their attention to their upcoming Ligue 1 fixture against Brest.

Betting companies have published odds for the match, with Rennes listed as favourites, though the club remains fully focused on its on-field preparation rather than external predictions.

As Fofana edges closer to full fitness, the coming weeks will determine how quickly he can re-establish himself in a crowded midfield and regain the influence he held before injury interrupted his season.
