CAF Champions League: Stade Malien earns first group-stage win with confident display against Simba SC
Stade Malien claimed their first victory of the CAF Champions League group stage with a composed 2-1 win over Simba SC, delivering a performance that reinforced their ambitions in this year’s competition.
The Malian side built a commanding lead in the first half and held firm after the break to secure three valuable points.
The home team made an ideal start, asserting control early and breaking the deadlock in the 16th minute through Taddeus Nikeng.
His well-taken goal rewarded Stade Malien’s energetic opening and immediately placed Simba SC under pressure.
The momentum continued to shift in the Malians’ favour, and within seven minutes they doubled their advantage.
Ismaila Simpara, wearing the number 23 shirt, finished off a flowing move to extend the lead and lift the atmosphere inside the stadium.
At 2-0, Stade Malien appeared to be cruising toward their first win of the group stage, having been held to a goalless draw by ES Tunis the previous week.
Their attacking rhythm and discipline without the ball kept Simba SC on the back foot throughout the first 45 minutes.
The second half, however, brought a different tone. Simba SC responded with determination and managed to pull a goal back nine minutes after the restart.
The strike offered a lifeline to the Tanzanian club, who had struggled to establish themselves before the interval. With the score now 2-1, the match tightened, and both sides increased their intensity.
Despite the shift in momentum, Stade Malien remained composed.
Their defensive organisation, which had been a highlight of their opening draw against ES Tunis, once again proved decisive.
Simba SC pressed forward in search of an equaliser, but the Malian champions closed down spaces effectively and prevented any clear breakthrough.
Their controlled possession in key periods helped neutralise Simba’s late pressure and ensured the lead remained intact until the final whistle.
This first win of the campaign marks an important step for Stade Malien, who now sit in a stronger position heading into the remaining fixtures of the group stage.
With four points from their opening two matches, the Bamako-based side has demonstrated both resilience and efficiency—qualities that will be essential as the level of competition intensifies.
Simba SC, meanwhile, will need to regroup quickly.
After a loss and a laboured performance in Bamako, they face mounting pressure to revive their campaign in the upcoming matchdays.
