Ola Aina eyes elusive World Cup dream as final opportunity nears

President of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) Ibrahim Musa Gusau has paid a visit to Super Eagles and Nottingham Forest defender Ola Aina as he continues his recovery from a hamstring injury.

The 29-year-old right-back has been out of action since September after picking up an injury in a 2026 World Cup qualifier between Nigeria and South Africa, where both teams shared the spoils.

In his absence, the Super Eagles of Nigeria failed to book qualification to the global showpiece to be staged in the USA, Canada and Mexico, while Nottingham Forest continues to struggle in the Premier League this season.

Ola Aina is progressing well with Nottingham Forest sports science team and physiotherapists, but has not yet returned to full training. The Premier League outfit is taking a careful approach to make sure he completes every stage of rehabilitation without any setbacks.

However, the NFF leader has traveled to London, England to offer support to the enterprising defender as he works toward a full comeback. Gusau’s visit allowed him to get firsthand updates on Aina’s condition few weeks to the commencement of the AFCON 2025 in Morocco.

Despite the disruption, optimism is growing about Aina’s chances of being fit for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco this December. His experience and versatility are expected to be valuable assets for the Super Eagles provided he returns for the tournament.

Ola Aina has been limited to only three appearances across competitions for Nottingham Forest due to the setback.

Since making his debut for Nigeria in 2017, the full-back has racked up 48 appearances for the Super Eagles but he is yet to score or register an assist.
