Ivorian midfielder Ismaël Diomandé bids farewell to football after a decade-long career

Ivorian midfielder Ismaël Diomandé has announced his retirement from professional football, bringing an end to a career that spanned more than a decade across Europe.

The 33-year-old, who last played for Romanian side Petrolul Ploiești, revealed his decision in an emotional message shared on Instagram, marking the close of a chapter that began in France and saw him wear the colours of several clubs and his national team.

“Thank you and thank you for me at 33 years old it has been incredible but everything has an end, an end of career!! I am retiring from sports!! I will not leave the world of football because football has given me everything, thank you again to everyone it has been a great thrill, one page closes, a new one opens,”

Diomandé wrote, expressing gratitude to all who had supported him throughout his journey.

Diomandé’s professional story began at Saint-Étienne, where he came through the ranks and made his senior debut.

His energy, determination and quiet leadership made him a dependable figure for Les Verts, where he spent his most memorable seasons before moving abroad to continue his career in Turkey and later Romania.

Throughout his professional journey, the midfielder made more than 220 appearances, scoring nine goals and providing three assists.

While not a headline-grabbing player, Diomandé earned respect for his work ethic and discipline, traits that made him a trusted presence in every squad he joined.

However, his biggest career highlight came on the international stage.

Diomandé was part of Ivory Coast’s golden generation, featuring at the 2014 FIFA World Cup and helping his country lift the Africa Cup of Nations trophy in 2015 — a moment that remains etched in the hearts of Ivorian fans.

His contribution to that triumphant campaign, though often understated, symbolised the depth and unity of a team that restored Ivory Coast’s dominance in African football.

As he steps away from playing, Diomandé hinted that his future will still be connected to the sport that defined his life.

I will not leave the world of football, he noted, suggesting a possible transition into another role within the game.

From his early days in France to international glory with the Elephants, Ismaël Diomandé’s career has been one built on perseverance and humility — qualities that have earned him the admiration of teammates and supporters alike.
