Vladimir Petkovic weighs Luca Zidane start as Rafik Belghali set for Algeria debut

Algeria coach Vladimir Petkovic has finalised his tactical plans ahead of Thursday’s World Cup qualifier against Somalia, with key selection decisions centred on goalkeeper Luca Zidane and young full-back Rafik Belghali.

Petkovic, who continues to blend consistency with renewal, has sought to maintain his side’s solid framework while introducing fresh energy through emerging talents.

Injuries to Youcef Atal and Rayan Aït-Nouri have forced defensive adjustments, paving the way for Belghali to make his competitive debut.

The 22-year-old Hellas Verona defender is expected to start at right-back, while Kevin Guitoun remains an alternative option despite limited minutes at Charleroi.

In central defence, Aïssa Mandi and Ramy Bensebaïni are once again expected to anchor the back line, with Joaquim Hajem retaining his place on the left after a series of strong performances in recent outings.

The main question mark lies between the posts.

CR Belouizdad’s Alexis Guendouz and Granada’s Luca Zidane are vying for the starting spot.

Although Guendouz has been a regular in recent fixtures, his uneven displays against Botswana and Guinea have opened the door for Zidane, whose composure and authority have reportedly impressed the technical staff.

Facing a Somali side that has scored only three goals in eight qualifiers, Petkovic could see this match as the perfect opportunity to hand Zidane his first cap for Algeria.

In midfield, Petkovic is expected to keep faith with his trusted trio: Nabil Bentaleb’s balance and control, Hicham Boudaoui’s work rate, and Farès Chaïbi’s creative influence in the final third. This combination has given the Greens a solid spine throughout the campaign.

Up front, captain Riyad Mahrez will once again lead the charge.

The Manchester City winger will be joined by Mohamed Amoura, whose pace and agility pose a constant threat, and Amine Gouiri, who will look to extend his international tally to seven goals.

Petkovic also has attacking depth on the bench, with Anis Hadj-Moussa, Ilan Kebbal, and Ibrahim Maza all available to inject energy late in the game.

Victory in Oran would secure Algeria’s place at the 2026 World Cup, marking a fifth appearance on football’s biggest stage.

Petkovic’s approach reflects a calculated balance — building for the future while ensuring the present objective is met with conviction and composure.
