CAN 2017: Very bad news for the Pharaohs of Egypt
Egypt Now Relies on Veteran Goalkeeper Essam El-Hadary
Following Egypt’s 0-0 draw with Mali in Group D of the 2017 African Cup of Nations, coach Hector Cuper faces a critical goalkeeping situation. Ahmed El-Shenawy was forced off injured in the 25th minute, giving way to veteran Essam El-Hadary, aged 44. The third-choice goalkeeper, Sherif Ekramy, is also sidelined due to injury.
“Regarding El-Shenawy’s injury, I don’t know more. It’s very frustrating because Sherif Ekramy is also injured,” Cuper said after Egypt’s opening match.
With limited options, Egypt is now relying heavily on El-Hadary, a four-time CAN winner, to lead the Pharaohs through the remainder of the tournament.
