CAN 2017: Cameroonian Choupo-Moting explains his refusal!

CAN 2017 – Choupo-Moting explains his decision to skip the tournament with Cameroon

It’s now official — Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting will not take part in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations with Cameroon. The Schalke 04 midfielder has decided to withdraw from the Indomitable Lions’ squad, choosing instead to focus on his club commitments in the Bundesliga.

The news has caused quite a stir in Cameroon, as the 27-year-old has long been seen as one of the team’s key players. According to reports, Choupo-Moting’s decision may also stem from growing unease within the national setup, where disagreements and tension have been brewing behind the scenes.

In a lengthy message posted on Instagram, the midfielder sought to clarify his position and express his continued affection for his country and teammates.

“It was not an easy decision to make,” he wrote. “I have always been proud to represent Cameroon, but after discussions with my club and family, I believe it’s best for me to stay and focus on this important stage of my career. I will always support my teammates and wish them success in Gabon.”

Choupo-Moting’s absence is not an isolated case. Several other players, including Joël Matip, Allan Nyom, and Roland Ndy-Assembe, have also turned down coach Hugo Broos’ invitation to join the squad for this year’s competition.

These repeated withdrawals have sparked debate about the atmosphere surrounding the Indomitable Lions and the challenges faced by Broos as he attempts to rebuild a competitive team. Despite these setbacks, Cameroon will still aim to make a strong impression in Gabon, even without some of their most experienced stars.
