Algerian Ligue 1: Leaders face stern away tests
The third round of the Ligue 1 Mobilis season brings challenging away fixtures for co-leaders Olympique Akbou and MB Rouissat, both of whom will be tested against heavyweight opposition this weekend.
Akbou travel to Tizi Ouzou on Friday for a much-anticipated clash with JS Kabylie at the Hocine Aït Ahmed Stadium.
The derby atmosphere promises intensity, with the Green and Yellow still searching for their first victory of the campaign after being held to a 1-1 draw by ES Ben Aknoun in their only match so far.
For newly promoted Akbou, it will require discipline and resilience to resist Kabylie’s attacking pressure in front of a passionate home crowd.
Rouissat, the other surprise early leader and also a promoted side, face a demanding trip to Constantine on Saturday.
Their opponents, CS Constantine, are determined to bounce back after a 2-0 defeat to ES Mostaganem last time out.
For Rouissat, it represents their sternest examination yet of life at the top level, with their early momentum set to be measured against one of the league’s traditional powerhouses.
Elsewhere, the Algiers derby between Paradou AC and USM Alger is set to capture local attention, while MC Oran take on ES Mostaganem in a western showdown.
Both matches are expected to deliver intensity and closely contested football, with bragging rights and valuable points at stake.
ES Sétif and ASO Chlef, both of whom suffered home defeats in the previous round, face tricky away assignments against MC El Bayadh and JS Saoura respectively.
Each fixture looks finely balanced, with unpredictability likely to dominate the narrative.
Champions CR Belouizdad will also be put to the test against USM Khenchela, who have emerged as one of the early surprises this season.
Belouizdad will look to reassert their dominance, but Khenchela’s strong start suggests no guarantees for the title holders.
The round will, however, be missing one of its most anticipated fixtures.
The Algiers derby between MC Alger and ES Ben Aknoun has been postponed due to the unavailability of stadiums in the capital.
With several venues under renovation, fixture scheduling has become complicated, particularly with multiple Algiers-based clubs – including MCA, USMA, CRB, PAC and ESBA – all requiring hosting arrangements at the same time.
Despite the postponement, the weekend’s fixtures still promise drama across the country.
With USMA, MCA, JSK and CRB all holding a game in hand due to earlier international commitments, the table remains open and highly competitive.
The third matchday is set to provide more clarity on which teams can sustain early momentum and which will need to recalibrate their ambitions.
