2025 FIFA U20 World Cup: Morocco advance to semi-final with stunning 3-1 win against USA
Morocco’s U20 national team continued their impressive run at the 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup, securing a 3-1 victory over the United States in the quarter-finals at the El Teniente Stadium in Rancagua to book their place in the semi-finals.
The Atlas Cubs began the game cautiously, allowing the US to dominate possession in the early stages.
However, Morocco’s counter-attacking play quickly became a major threat, with captain Othmane Maamma leading by example on the flanks.
Their patience paid off in the 31st minute when Fouad Zahouani opened the scoring after being set up by Maamma, who went on to earn the Man of the Match award.
The Americans pulled level just before halftime through a penalty converted by Borussia Dortmund forward Cole Campbell, following a questionable foul on Ali Maamar. Despite the setback, Morocco regrouped after the break and regained control of the match.
In the 66th minute, a defensive mix-up saw Joshua Wynder turn the ball into his own net to restore Morocco’s lead. Then, in the 87th minute, Yassine Gessime sealed the victory by punishing a defensive blunder, calmly slotting home to make it 3-1.
The result sees Morocco replicate the success of their 2005 U20 side, which reached the semi-finals under Fathi Jamal in the Netherlands. Mohamed Wahbi’s team will now face either France or Norway on October 15.
Although the United States dominated possession with over 75% of the ball, Morocco’s disciplined defending, quick transitions, and clinical finishing proved the difference, sending the North Africans one step closer to history.
