2025 AFCON: I hope the trophy stays in Morocco – Nayef Aguerd
Morocco defender Nayef Aguerd is hoping they can win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Morocco recently made history by becoming the first national team ever to win 16 consecutive matches during the October international break. The Atlas Lions broke the previous record of 15 victories jointly held by Spain (2008) and Germany (2014), both eventual World Cup winners.
Speaking at a press conference monitored by Africasoccer, the Marseille and Morocco centre-back reflected on the team’s record-breaking run and their determination ahead of the continental showpiece.
“It wasn’t easy – even with the quality of our squad and the infrastructure we have in Morocco, 16 straight wins is difficult,” Aguerd said.
“I’m proud of the coach; he’s given so much to Moroccan football. We have a young group with a lot of talent. It’s a record, and hopefully we can go for a 17th win.”
Looking ahead to AFCON 2025, Aguerd emphasised the importance of maintaining focus and composure, adding that he hopes Morocco lifts the trophy at the end of the tournament.
“The AFCON is at home, and we can’t afford to make mistakes. It’s a positive kind of pressure – I hope the trophy stays in Morocco,” he added.
