2019 AFCON: Alex Iwobi, saddened after Egypt’s elimination
Alex Iwobi’s comments about Egypt have sparked curiosity, with many wondering whether the Nigerian international has a special connection to the host nation. The Arsenal forward recently admitted he was saddened by the Pharaohs’ elimination in the round of 16 of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, after they were knocked out by South Africa.
Speaking to the CAF website, Iwobi expressed genuine disappointment at seeing Egypt exit the tournament so early, pointing to the quality within their squad and the passion of their supporters. “It was sad to see great teams leave, especially Egypt. It’s disappointing for the fans and the team, which had so many talented players,” he said.
Beyond football, Iwobi also spoke warmly about his experiences in Egypt, praising both the country and its people. “This isn’t my first time in Egypt. It’s a beautiful country, and the people are simply amazing and very helpful. Everyone here treats us so kindly. I would tell everyone to come to Egypt and enjoy their time here,” added the Nigerian winger, highlighting the hospitality he has encountered.
While disappointed for the hosts, Iwobi remains fully focused on Nigeria’s own ambitions in the competition. The Super Eagles are targeting the ultimate prize, with the final scheduled for July 19 at the Cairo International Stadium. For Iwobi, lifting the AFCON trophy would represent the fulfillment of a long-held dream.
“We need to focus and do our best. We are confident that we can go far and make Nigeria proud. I have long dreamed of winning this very important title with my team. I hope we can achieve it this year. We are a young team, made up of many talented players with a bright future,” he concluded, underlining both belief and optimism within the squad.
Before thinking about the final, however, Nigeria face a major test. To keep their dream alive, Iwobi and his teammates must overcome Algeria this Sunday in the semi-finals of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, a clash that will determine who earns the right to compete for continental glory.
